Abstract

RESUMO O presente artigo, apoiando-se na constatação da ausência de pesquisas acerca das irmandades de pretos constituídas no âmbito rural, procura contribuir com uma breve análise a respeito da “Confraria dos Homens Pretos da Irmandade do Rozario” de Taubaté, cidade do Vale do Paraíba Paulista, que se transformou na segunda metade do século XIX, juntamente com Bananal, em sustentáculo da economia imperial brasileira. Através do cruzamento de fontes diversas, foi possível empreender um esforço de aproximação com os irmãos do Rosário de Taubaté, identificando-os nos plantéis de seus proprietários, no caso daqueles escravizados, e ainda constatar a participação de livres e libertos, brancos e pardos no interior da irmandade. A convivência dos pretos do Rosário com uma gama variada de tipos sociais denota a importância dessa irmandade como um espaço estratégico de circulação de cativos e libertos entre o eito e a vila, possibilitando ainda a interação destes com a sociedade mais ampla

ABSTRACT This article, based on the lack of research on the black brotherhoods constituted in the countryside, seeks to contribute with a brief analysis about the “Brotherhood of Black Men of the Brotherhood of the Rozario” of Taubaté, a city in the Paraíba Valley Paulista, which was transformed in the second half of the nineteenth century, together with Bananal, in support of the Brazilian imperial economy. Through the crossing of diverse sources, it was possible to make an effort to approach the brothers of the Rosário de Taubaté, identifying them in the plots of their owners, in the case of those enslaved, and also to note the participation of free and freedmen, whites and pardos in the inside the fellowship. The coexistence of Rosario’s blacks with a varied range of social types denotes the importance of the brotherhood as a strategic space for the movement of captives and freedmen between the village and the village, enabling their interaction with the wider society.
