          Abstract

          Resumen La investigación sobre formas de pensamiento algebraico no evade la discusión de las formas de pensamiento aritmético. Resultados de investigación muestran que la ausencia de indicios espaciales en el estudio de secuencias numéricas hace que los estudiantes limiten el proceso de generalización al trabajo sobre relaciones entre números. En este artículo, a partir de datos provenientes de una investigación doctoral y de un programa de extensión con profesores de matemáticas, se analiza la actividad semiótica de una estudiante y de una profesora de primaria, respectivamente. El análisis sugiere la presencia de una zona conceptual en la que formas sofisticadas de generalización aritmética estarían muy cerca de proto-formas de pensamiento algebraico, y, además, abre pistas para profundizar la reflexión epistemológica en aras de lograr una caracterización más inteligible de esta zona conceptual en el aprendizaje del álgebra.

          Translated abstract

          Abstract The investigation of forms of algebraic thinking does not evade the discussion on forms of arithmetical thinking. Previous studies show that the absence of spatial clues in the students’ investigation of numerical sequences leads to the generalization of relationships between numbers, which implicitly facilitates the emergence of trial-error strategies that stand as an obstacle to the deductive thinking on which analyticity rests. Based on data from PhD research and an extension program with mathematics teachers, the semiotic activity of a student and a primary school teacher, respectively, is analyzed. This analysis suggests the presence of a conceptual zone in which sophisticated forms of arithmetic generalization would be very close to proto-forms of algebraic thinking, and, furthermore, it opens a path to deepen the epistemological reflection in order to achieve a better understanding of this conceptual zone.
