Abstract

Resumen El presente artículo explora la relación entre modernidad y religión a partir de los discursos de miembros de la Iglesia Adventista del Séptimo Día en el sur de Chile. La investigación se sitúa en Valdivia, ciudad caracterizada por la pluralidad religiosa, y busca conocer las definiciones y características que los propios creyentes atribuyen al fenómeno de la modernidad. A partir de una aproximación cualitativa que incorpora el análisis del ciclo vital de los creyentes, se recogen discursos que dan cuenta de una visión tensionada de la modernidad. Las nociones de mundanidad y desplazamiento, propuestas por los propios entrevistados, nos permiten una reflexión con base en sus experiencias vitales. Los creyentes desarrollan una valoración de lo moderno que no permanece estática, sino que se torna compleja en virtud de los cambios que experimentan a lo largo de su vida. Se manifiesta una postura de indocilidad frente a un mundo que es concebido como peligroso para la vida en la fe, pero que también ofrece posibilidades de integración parcial. Es, en suma, un nexo entre transformaciones personales, normas grupales y presiones externas cuyo análisis contribuye a aterrizar y enriquecer la vieja, aunque nunca acabada, problematización de las relaciones entre modernidad y religión.

Abstract This article explores the relationship between modernity and religion through the discourses of members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in southern Chile. The research is located in Valdivia, a city characterized by religious plurality, and seeks to know the definitions and characteristics that the believers themselves attribute to the phenomenon of modernity. From a qualitative approach that incorporates the analysis of the life cycle of believers, discourses are collected that show a tensioned vision of modernity. The notions of worldliness and displacement, proposed by the interviewees themselves, allow us to reflect on their life experiences. Believers develop a valuation of modernity that does not remain static, but becomes complex by virtue of the changes they experience throughout their lives. A posture of indocility is manifested in the face of a world that is conceived as dangerous for life in faith but which also offers possibilities of partial integration. It is, in short, a nexus between personal transformations, group norms and external pressures whose analysis contributes to ground and enrich the old, though never finished, problematization of the relationship between modernity and religion.
