          Abstract

          Los aceites esenciales de Tagetes filifolia tienen potencial para controlar insectos biotransmisores de virus en plantas. El objetivo del presente estudio fue evaluar la composición del aceite esencial de 78 recolectas de T. filifolia de la región centro-sur de México, establecidas en Chapingo, México. Cuando las plantas presentaron floración se hizo la extracción de aceites esenciales por arrastre de vapor usando 500 g de tejido de la planta completa. La composición química del aceite se determinó con cromatografía de gases acoplada a masas. Los compuestos principales del aceite fueron 4-alilanisol y trans-anetol (4-propenilanisol), en forma individual o en mezcla: 1.3% de las recolectas sólo con anetol, 7.7% de las recolectas sólo con alilanisol y 91% de recolectas con mezcla. En las recolectas con mezcla de anetol y alilanisol, la proporción de estos compuestos químicos fue variable.

          Translated abstract

          The essential oils of Tagetes filifolia have potential for controlling insects that are biotransmitters of virus in plants. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the composition of the essential oil of 78 accessions of T. filifolia of the south-central region of México, established in Chapingo, México. When the plants presented flowering, the extraction of the essential oils was made by simple distrillation process using 500 g of tissue of the complete plant. The chemical composition of the oil was determined with gas chromatography coupled to masses. The principal components of the oil were 4-alilanisole and trans-anethole (4-propenilanisole), individually or in mixture: 1.3% of the accessions only with anethole, 7.7% of the accessions only with alilanisole and 91% of accessions with mixture. In the accessions with mixture of anethole and alilanisole, the proportion of these chemical compounds was variable.

          Botanical insecticides, deterrents, and repellents in modern agriculture and an increasingly regulated world.

          Botanical insecticides have long been touted as attractive alternatives to synthetic chemical insecticides for pest management because botanicals reputedly pose little threat to the environment or to human health. The body of scientific literature documenting bioactivity of plant derivatives to arthropod pests continues to expand, yet only a handful of botanicals are currently used in agriculture in the industrialized world, and there are few prospects for commercial development of new botanical products. Pyrethrum and neem are well established commercially, pesticides based on plant essential oils have recently entered the marketplace, and the use of rotenone appears to be waning. A number of plant substances have been considered for use as insect antifeedants or repellents, but apart from some natural mosquito repellents, little commercial success has ensued for plant substances that modify arthropod behavior. Several factors appear to limit the success of botanicals, most notably regulatory barriers and the availability of competing products (newer synthetics, fermentation products, microbials) that are cost-effective and relatively safe compared with their predecessors. In the context of agricultural pest management, botanical insecticides are best suited for use in organic food production in industrialized countries but can play a much greater role in the production and postharvest protection of food in developing countries.

            GC-MS determination of flavonoids and phenolic and benzoic acids in human plasma after consumption of cranberry juice.

            A GC-MS method was developed for the determination of various flavonoids and phenolic and benzoic acids in human plasma. The procedure involved the extraction of flavonoids and phenolic and benzoic acids with ethyl acetate, followed by the derivatization of the phenolic and benzoic compounds with BSTFA (N,O-bis(trimethylsilyl) trifluoroacetamide) + TMCS (trimethylchlorosilane) reagent. The trimethylsilyl derivatives formed were separated and quantitated using GC-MS. Twenty flavonoids and phenolic and benzoic compounds have been well separated in the spiked human plasma without any interference. The average recovery was 79.3%. Several phenolic acids such as o-hydroxybenzoic, p-hydroxyphenylacetic, 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic, 2,4-dihydroxybenzoic, ferulic, sinapic, and benzoic acid were identified and quantified in human plasma after consumption of a cranberry juice. This developed method provides a simple, specific, and sensitive technique for the simultaneous determination of flavonoids and phenolic and benzoic acids in human plasma and is suitable for bioavailability and pharmacokinetic studies.
