El modelo panóptico en la arquitectura penitenciaria argentina: la primera cárcel en la ciudad. Mendoza, 1864

Abstract

La propuesta benthamiana del panopticum ejerció una marcada influencia en la teoría arquitectónica de cárceles y en la materialización de varios edificios penitenciarios en Europa y América Latina. Ese fue el caso de la primera cárcel de Mendoza, Argentina, construida en 1864. A partir de ella intentaremos explicar, desde una perspectiva funcional, constructiva, simbólica y social, el tipo de apropiación material y teórica que hizo del modelo panóptico por primera vez la arquitectura penitenciaria argentina del siglo XIX.

La proposition de Bentham du panopticum a exercé une influence remarquable sur la théorie architecturale des prisons et sur la matérialisation de plusieurs bâtiments pénitentiaires en Europe et Amérique Latine. Ça a été le cas de la première prison à Mendoza,Argentine. A partir de celle-ci on essayera d’expliquer, dès une perspective fonctionnelle, constructive, symbolique et sociale, le type d’appropriation matérielle et théorique du modèle panoptique que a fait, pour la première fois, l’architecture pénitentiaire argentine du dixneuvième siècle.

Bentham’s proposal of the panopticum has exerted a remarkable influence in the theory of prisonarchitecture as well as in the construction of penitentiarybuildings in Europe and Latin America. This was the case of the first prison of Argentina’s Mendoza, built in 1864. On the basis of this example we will try to explain, froma functional, constructive, symbolic, and social perspective, the material and theoretical type ofappropriation of the panoptic model that Argentina’s penitentiary architecture of the nineteenth century did for the first time.
