          Abstract

Objective To investigate the trends in disease burden due to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in Jiangsu Province, so as to provide insights into the formulation of the NAFLD control strategy.

Methods The prevalence, mortality, disability-adjusted life year (DALY), standardized prevalence, standardized mortality and standardized DALY rate of NALFD in Jiangsu Province from 1990 to 2019 were captured from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 (GBD2019) dataset, and the trends in disease burden due to NALFD were evaluated with annual percent change (APC) using the software Joinpoint 4.2.

Results The prevalence, mortality, DALY rate of NAFLD were 22.52%, 1.35/10 5 and 31.36/10 5, which all appeared a rise with age, and the standardized prevalence, mortality, DALY rate of NAFLD were 16.04%, 0.84/10 5 and 19.73/10 5 in Jiangsu Province in 2019. The prevalence of NAFLD appeared an overall tendency towards a rise in Jiangsu Province from 1990 to 2019 (APC = 2.2%, t = 7.8, P<0.01), and the mortality appeared an overall tendency towards a decline (APC = −2.2%, t = −3.6, P <0.01), while the DALY rate appeared an overall tendency towards a decline, with a 43.12% reduction over the 30 years (APC = −2.8%, t = −4.3, P<0.01).

Conclusions The prevalence of NAFLD appeared a tendency towards a rise in Jiangsu Province from 1990 to 2019, and the disease burden due to NAFLD increased with age. Early identification, early diagnosis and early treatment may improve the prognosis of NAFLD and patients’ quality of life.
