          Abstract

          Los lipomas son tumores benignos compuestos por células grasas. Ellos son los tumores mesenquimales más comunes. Se encuentran en el tejido subcutáneo y menos frecuente en órganos internos. Usualmente presentan poca dificultad de diagnóstico y morbilidad. Los lipomas típicamente se desarrollan como masas elásticas discretas en el tejido subcutáneo y tejidos blandos profundos en el adulto. Muchos signos cutáneos y algunos síndromes son anatómicamente muy complejos y pueden estar asociados con un lipoma subyacente. Recientemente un número de nuevas entidades y variantes han sido descriptas. Su reconocimiento es importante para evitar el diagnósitco fallido y terapias inapropiadas. Lipoma condroide, miolipoma y lipoma pleomórfico de células ahusadas puramente cutáneo, son neoplasias biológicamente benignas que pueden simular sarcomas morfológicamente. El advenimiento de las investigaciones moleculares y citogenéticas de las neoplasias lipomatosas tienden a contribuir más al entendimiento de la biología de aquéllas y guiar a la modificación de los esquemas de clasificación convencional.

          Translated abstract

          Lipomas are benign tumors componed of mature fat cells. They are the most common benign mesenchymal tumor. Lipomas are found in the subcutaneous tissues and, less commonly, in internal organs. They usually present with little difficulty in diagnosis or morbidity. Lipomas typically develop as discrete rubbery masses in the subcutaneous tissues of the trunk and proximal extremity. Are the most common neoplasms of subcutaneous and deep soft tissues in adults. Most cutaneous signatures and someone syndromes are anatomically more complex and can associated with an underlying lipoma. In recent years a number of "new" entities and variants have been described. Their recognition is important to avoid diagnostic pitfalls and inappropriare therapy. Chondroid lipoma, myolipoma, and purely cutaneous spindle-cell/pleomorphic lipoma are biologically benign neoplasms which may mimic sarcomas morphologically. The advent of cytogenetic and molecular investigations of lipomatous neoplasms has contributed to a better understanding of the biology of these neoplasms and led to a modification of conventional classification schemes.

          Evaluation of Integrated Management of Neonatal and Childhood Illness (IMNCI) algorithm for diagnosis and referral in under-five children.

          A prospective observational study was conducted on 500 children to evaluate the Integrated Management of Neonatal and Childhood Illnesses (IMNCI) algorithm for diagnosis and referral of children aged 0-59 mo. IMNCI algorithm performed well in diagnosis [except sepsis in 0-7 d (p < 0.01) and malaria in 2-59 mo (p < 0.01)] and referral of under five illnesses. The proportion of children with the mismatch between 'IMNCI' diagnosis and 'Gold Standard' diagnosis were highest (38.7 %) among children 0-7 d of age. The authors conclude that IMNCI algorithm in young children has good sensitivity for referring children with severe illnesses and is a good tool for diagnosis of most of childhood illnesses in under-five children.

              Nevus psiloliparus: A Distinct Fatty Tissue Nevus

              Background: Encephalocraniocutaneous lipomatosis is usually associated with a peculiar type of fatty tissue nevus which represents a smoothly surfaced and hairless lesion involving the scalp. This disorder has so far not been recognized as a cutaneous entity. Objective: The purpose of this article is to describe the characteristic features of this nevus and to give it a name. Method: From the study of two cases and from a review of the literature we delineate the clinical and histopathological criteria of this disorder for which we propose the term ‘nevus psiloliparus’. This name is derived from the Greek words psilós = hairless and liparós = fatty, and describes the two most characteristic features of the disorder. Results: A comprehensive comparison shows that nevus psiloliparus can be distinguished from other types of fatty tissue nevi by clinical criteria such as localization on the scalp, a flat smooth surface and absence of hair follicles, by the histopathological feature of isolated arrector pili muscles and by the presence of associated extracutaneous features in the form of encephalocraniocutaneous lipomatosis. In particular, nevus psiloliparus can be separated from the Hoffmann-Zurhelle nevus that has so far never been observed in cases of encephalocraniocutaneous lipomatosis. Conclusion: The presently available data suggest that nevus psiloliparus represents a distinct cutaneous entity. Future clinical and genetic research should show whether this concept holds true.
