          Abstract

          Translated abstract

Pain is defined as an unpleasant sensorial and emotional experience, associated to a real or potential tissue damage or described in terms of such damage. In this context, not only the physical and chemical components involved are considered, but also the subjective and psychological aspects are crucial to the understanding of pain complaints. Thus, the objective of this study was to identify Brazilian psychological studies about pain and their variables. Through Doca's (2009) standardized method, that makes a priority of the journals evaluated by CAPES that were qualified as QUALIS A. Fourteen articles, provided by 32 possible Brazilian journals were subjected to analysis, as well as articles published in the Dor Journal. It was observed that the Brazilian psychology has yet to fill in its space in this field and, in disagreement to the need suggested by the literature of the field, the articles noted in this article there is a low absolute number of psychosocial variables relevant to the study in the field of pain.

The McGill Pain Questionnaire: major properties and scoring methods.

          R Melzack (1975)
The McGill Pain Questionnaire consists primarily of 3 major classes of word descriptors--sensory, affective and evaluative--that are used by patients to specify subjective pain experience. It also contains an intensity scale and other items to determine the properties of pain experience. The questionnaire was designed to provide quantitative measures of clinical pain that can be treated statistically. This paper describes the procedures for administration of the questionnaire and the various measures that can be derived from it. The 3 major measures are: (1) the pain rating index, based on two types of numerical values that can be assigned to each word descriptor, (2) the number of words chosen; and (3) the present pain intensity based on a 1-5 intensity scale. Correlation coefficients among these measures, based on data obtained with 297 patients suffering several kinds of pain, are presented. In addition, an experimental study which utilized the questionnaire is analyzed in order to describe the nature of the information that is obtained. The data, taken together, indicate that the McGill Pain Questionnaire provides quantitative information that can be treated statistically, and is sufficiently sensitive to detect differences among different methods to relieve pain.

Psychological factors in chronic pain: evolution and revolution.

Research has demonstrated the importance of psychological factors in coping, quality of life, and disability in chronic pain. Furthermore, the contributions of psychology in the effectiveness of treatment of chronic pain patients have received empirical support. The authors describe a biopsychosocial model of chronic pain and provide an update on research implicating the importance of people's appraisals of their symptoms, their ability to self-manage pain and related problems, and their fears about pain and injury that motivate efforts to avoid exacerbation of symptoms and further injury or reinjury. They provide a selected review to illustrate treatment outcome research, methodological issues, practical, and clinical issues to identify promising directions. Although there remain obstacles, there are also opportunities for psychologists to contribute to improved understanding of pain and treatment of people who suffer from chronic pain. The authors conclude by noting that pain has received a tremendous amount of attention culminating in the passage of a law by the U.S. Congress designating the period 2001-2011 as the "The Decade of Pain Control and Research."
