          Abstract

Objectives: To determine the frequency of need for orthodontic treatment self-perceived by 12-year-old schoolchildren from El Sagrario, Cuenca, year 2016. Material and Methods: The applied methodology was descriptive, cross-sectional survey type. The sample size was calculated using a formula, which was 143 of the 12-year-old schoolchildren from whom the parents accepted consent and the schoolchildren gave their informed consent to be part of the study. Qualitative data were analyzed using the chi-square test to determine independence between the degrees of need for self-perceived orthodontic treatment and gender Results: The results were that 18% perceive themselves while 82% do not perceive themselves the need for orthodontic treatment. According to the degrees of necessity they have a 82% no need, 13% moderate need and only 5% a severe need for self-perceived need for orthodontic treatment. The female self-perceive the need for treatment at 9.8% while 8.4% are males. Conclusions: Most schoolchildren in 12 years of the parish El Sagrario, evaluated by the aesthetic component of IONT not perceive themselves the need for orthodontic treatment.

The development of an index of orthodontic treatment priority.

          P Brook, W Shaw (1989)
The aim of this study was to develop a valid and reproducible index of orthodontic treatment priority. After reviewing the available literature, it was felt that this could be best achieved by using two separate components to record firstly the dental health and functional indications for treatment, and secondly the aesthetic impairment caused by the malocclusion. A modification of the index used by the Swedish Dental Health Board was used to record the need for orthodontic treatment on dental health and functional grounds. This index was modified by defining five grades, with precise dividing lines between each grade. An illustrated 10-point scale was used to assess independently the aesthetic treatment need of the patients. This scale was constructed using dental photographs of 12-year-olds collected during a large multi-disciplinary survey. Six non-dental judges rated these photographs on a visual analogue scale, and at equal intervals along the judged range, representative photographs were chosen. To test the index in use, two sample populations were defined; a group of patients referred for treatment, and a random sample of 11-12-year-old schoolchildren. Both samples were examined using the index and satisfactory levels of intra- and inter-examiner agreement were obtained.

Orthodontic concerns of Brazilian children and their parents compared to the normative treatment need.

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the interest of both children and parents towards orthodontic treatment and compare it to the normative treatment need as well as to determine the factors related to such an interest. The sample consisted of 407 schoolchildren aged between 9 and 12 years and their parents from Nova Friburgo (Rio de Janeiro), Brazil. The orthodontic concern expressed by children and parents was obtained by means of a questionnaire. The normative need was evaluated using two components of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN). Data analysis involved multiple logistic regression. Normative treatment need was greater than the children's self-perceived treatment need. The parents expressed more interest towards orthodontic treatment of their children than the children themselves. The orthodontic concern expressed by both groups was greater than the normative need for orthodontic treatment, and such a finding was associated with gender of the children (female) and self-perceived treatment need expressed by them. The lack of a relationship between the normative treatment need and the orthodontic concern of children and parents shows that such assessments should be performed when orthodontic treatment is indicated, particularly in terms of public health, as the demand is greater than the services supplied.

Index of orthodontic treatment need in children from the Niš region.

The Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) is a scoring system for malocclusion that con- sists of the two independent components: Denal Health Component (DHC) and Aesthetic-Component (AC). IOTNs are usually used in the countries with dental healthcare financed by the government through the national healthcare system or healthcare insurance. The aim of the study was to determine IOTN in primary school children from the town of Niš and to asses percent of children with any kind of orthodontic treatment.
