Far too many PhD candidates still arrive on the day of the viva somewhat underprepared, anxious and daunted by the prospect of their oral defence of the thesis. A feeling of self-doubt, lack of confidence and last-minute panic due to the unpredictability of the line of questioning and the indeterminacy of the outcome of the examination, are not uncommon. It does not need to be this way! The aim of this chapter is to provide you with a greater understanding of what is involved in the viva, recommend when and how best to prepare for it and demystify the process by offering a clear guide of dos and don’ts, also with respect to a remotely hosted or online viva. Additionally, the chapter offers advice on how to deal with outcomes requiring minor or major amendments. The advice draws on many years of experience as a PhD supervisor, PhD examiner at different institutions (in the UK and abroad), Chair of doctoral examination committees and PhD Programme Director.
